Paul Hester
1959 - 2005

Mister Paul Hester, drummer extraordinaire for Australian band Crowded House, was found dead on Saturday afternoon, hanging from a tree in the Melbounre suburb of Brighton...

if it wasnt for me being on the whitlams mailing list, i would've been completely oblivious to the fact, that one of australia and the worlds best and funniest drummers commited suicide on saturday...

all weekend i've been putting songs on my ipod, and Crowded House was the last thing i put on there, so i'd been listening to it all yesterday and the day before (like i am now, but now im bawling)

i remember listening to Martin/Molloy everyday, and Paul Hester would come in and pissfart about with the boys, i remember watching Hessie's Shed, the show he used to host, i remember watching The Mick Molloy Show, when Hessie would make cucumber sandwhiches while wearing his apron and pouring tea!

listening to live Cowded House classics like "Sister Madly", "Don't Dream It's Over", "Fall At Your Feet" and "When You Come" with Paul yelling jokes from the drum kit, or fucking up by dropping a drum stick while he was in the middle of a song, making Neil stop singing all together, and making fun of Paul...

Paul Hester, you were an essential part of aussie rock, a great inspiration to me and we love you and we'll all miss you greatly

There is freedom within, there is freedom without
Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup
There's a battle ahead, many battles are lost
But you'll never see the end of the road
While you're traveling with me

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win

Now I'm towing my car, there's a hole in the roof
My possessions are causing me suspicion but there's no proof
In the paper today tales of war and of waste
But you turn right over to the T.V. page

Now I'm walking again to the beat of a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only shadows ahead barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and relief

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
Don't ever let them win
